Becoming a Resident Student Firefighter for
Aurora Rural Fire District No. 63
General The Resident Student Program is designed to augment volunteer and career firefighters and emergency medical forces with additional trained and motivated Firefighter/EMTs. Although it will strengthen human resources in the stations using the program, it will not replace existing resources.
Then general philosophy of the Resident Student Program is to provide a financially supported learning opportunity in conjunction with the Fire Science and Emergency Medical Programs at an institution of higher learning in trade for firefighting, emergency medical and other related Fire District services of the participants.
We are looking for highly motivated people who have a good work ethic and a positive attitude. Someone who is team and goal oriented. Person must have good ethics and morals as well as a professional appearance.
General Requirements
Students must be at least 18 years of age by the date of enrollment in the program.
Have a high school diploma or GED.
Students must possess a valid Oregon driver’s license and be insurable by the Fire District’s insurance carrier.
Students must pass an application process as defined by the District.
Educational Requirements
Must be enrolled as a full time student in a Fire Suppression or Fire Prevention program at an accredited college.
Student must maintain a 2.50 GPA
Shift & Work Requirements Students for the Aurora Fire District are on a 48 – 96 shift schedule.
Students are required to work 12-20 hrs. per week at the main station. During this time the student will operate as a member of a team while responding to any emergency in the district as well as perform any daily or weekly tasks that need to be done, such as; apparatus checks, building maintenance, public education, etc.
Housing Students for the Aurora Fire District live in one of two houses owned by the district. There is a house located in Aurora, and another in Donald. Each house is furnished with beds, linins, furniture, kitchen supplies, washer and dryer, TV and internet access. Students will be assigned to either station based on the districts current staffing needs.
Benefits Students for the Aurora fire District will receive a tuition reimbursement for each credit hour that they pass, as long as the class is applicable toward the Fire or EMS degree. The reimbursement will be paid per credit, up to 12 credits, at the rate of the current “in state” tuition.
As a student you have the option to choose whether you work 12 hours a week or 20 hours a week. If the student works 12 hours per week they will receive a stipend of $200 per month. If the student works 20 hours per week they will receive a stipend of $400 per month. All subject to change.
Selection Process
Candidates must complete and turn in a Fire District Application
Applications will be screened for eligibility and completeness.
Resumes are preferred but not required.
Chosen Candidates will then be invited to participate in a panel interview.
Upon successful completion of these steps candidates will be chosen based on their application, their interview and the current staffing needs of the District.
